About the Nick

The Nicholas J. Pernokas Recreation Park, known as “The Nick” is home for one of the finest recreational facilities located in the New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. The Wolfeboro Area Recreation Association, sponsor of the new park, is a private, nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to providing athletic and recreational opportunities for the community. The construction of The Nick is a major cornerstone to actively upholding the beliefs, traditions, and quality of life in the Wolfeboro community.

The Nick supports local youth sports leagues including Cal Ripken Baseball, Abenaki Lacrosse, Lakes Region Soccer Association, Babe Ruth Baseball, Pop Warner Football and a Field Hockey Program. Although the Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation Department currently operates many well organized sports and recreation programs for all ages, many of them have been restricted by lack of field space. With this new recreation park, organized programs throughout the greater Wolfeboro area can provide more recreational opportunities to a greater number of people.

With generous help from John and Jill Pernokas, who purchased and donated the 35 acre tract located on Route 28, The Nick became a reality. The community responded to a capital campaign that raised over $2.5 million to fund design, engineering, and construction of the park. The full story of how The Nick came to be has been chronicled in a book by Duke Southard titled “The Nick, A Vision Realized”.

Through continuing support of local businesses and individuals, the Nick is now entering its first season of full operation. The facilities are available to the public when not in scheduled use by organized leagues. Bring the whole family and enjoy the playground, play or watch a ball game, walk or run the track, and enjoy a snack at the Heart of the Park concession..
